AME Training

Introduction to Multi-Crew Jet Orientation Course for Aeromedical Examiners

This 5 day course will lead you through a basic understanding of how aircraft fly, how they are controlled and operated by the crew, and provide you with practical experience in a full-flight simulator of controlling a modern Boeing commercial jet aircraft in normal, non-normal and emergency situations.

Training will begin with a revision of pre-course material to clarify and expand your understanding of the principles of flight, the Earth's atmosphere, aircraft design, aircraft systems and the Flight Management Computer (FMC), by which an aircraft is operated in automatic flight (autopliot and autothrust). You will then move on to more practical training, such as cockpit layout and how the crew carry out their flight preparation, the phases of flight and the crew actions taken at each phase of normal operations.

The basic concepts of Multi Crew Co-operation (MCC) and how these are applied in each area of operation will be revised and developed. This will enable you, as a crewmember, to carry out effectively the actions needed to complete each phase of flight, using Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

As the week continues, more time will be spent applying what has been learnt, developing skills and giving you the opportunity to build your knowledge. The method of control of an aircraft on departure or arrival will be covered and there will be opportunities to learn and practice new skills on aircraft cockpit trainers and interactive training devices.

One half-day of the Course will be dedicated to aviation medical topics, with a review of a relevant aircraft accident and those aspects pertinent to the role of an AME.

There will be three Full Flight Simulator (FFS) sessions during the course. In the first, you will be led through operating and handling a jet aircraft in normal and emergency conditions on automatic flight. The final session will provide the opportunity for you, as a prospective AME, to apply your week's training to maximise the benefit of this experience of how flight crew work together.

Throughout the Course the training staff will be here to help and guide you.

We want you to learn from and enjoy this training experience and wish you every success.
